How the police use cookies

A cookie is a computer file that is stored on a user's hard-drive. The web browser then receives a small amount of data from websites the user has visited.

When you visit politiet.no, we collect information about how you use the site. We use this information to improve the site's contents. We do not link the data to you as an individual.

What are personal data?

Personal data are items of information and assessments that can be linked to an individual person. Examples of personal data include your name, address, phone number, email or IP address. Information about how you use politiet.no is also considered to be personal data, as long as it can be linked to you as an individual.

Who processes your personal data?

The National Police Directorate is responsible for deciding what personal data is collected when you use politiet.no, how it will be processed and for what purpose. In other words, the National Police Directorate is the data controller. Your personal data must be processed in compliance with Norway's Personal Data Act.

What are your rights?

Everyone is entitled to information about how their personal data are processed by an organisation or company. See Section 18(1) of the Norwegian Personal Data Act (lovdata.no). What information do we collect?

We collect information that you yourself provide

  • When you report a crime or send us information via politiet.no
  • When you type information into a form on politiet.no
  • When you give us feedback on our service via "Did you find what you were looking for?"

We collect information about how you use politiet.no

  • We record what kind of device you are using, such as a laptop, tablet or mobile phone.
  • We record your IP address, network service provider and which browser you use.
  • We record which pages you visit. We use Matomo software to collect the IP address of your device. We anonymise the IP address before it is stored by Matomo. In that way, neither Matomo or the police cannot identify you as an individual user.
  • We record what you search for. Politiet.no uses Episerver Find as a search engine. When you search for information on politiet.no, your IP address and details of what you are searching for are sent to Episerver Find. Information about which search results you click on is also sent to Episerver Find.
  • We record where you are. We do this with the help of your IP address. We can also pinpoint your location via your network signal. This is called geolocation. We do not store this information. We use the information only to tailor the website's contents to you. For example, news or information about a certain topic. You can choose not to allow us to use your position. But the contents of the site may not match your needs as closely.
  • We collect information on the police district and local authority you want information from. This information is stored in a cookie, which is – in turn – stored on your device. This happens when you visit a page whose contents match your needs. You can choose to turn off the cookies function. But the contents of the site will no longer be tailored to your particular police district.

What do we use the information for?

We store your personal data no longer than is necessary. Once we have processed your data, we delete them.

We do not share information about how you use the services with anyone else for purposes other than to operate the website politiet.no. The information is not traceable to you as an individual.

Here are the most important things we use your personal data for:

  1. We improve our service by adding to or changing content that is requested, or deleting content that is not relevant.
  2. We tailor the content of the site to your location and which police district or local authority you want information from.

You consent to the use of cookies

By using the website politiet.no, you are giving us permission to store cookies locally in your web browser. For example, we use cookies to record which police district you use information about. That makes it easier for us to give you information that is tailored to the place where you are located.

How to limit the personal data we store

You can limit the way we process your personal data. But politiet.no will no longer be tailored as closely to your individual needs. You can opt out of having your visits recorded by Matomo in your web browser. You can opt out of being tracked by Episerver Find by turning on the "Do Not Track" function in your web browser.

Most web browsers automatically allow cookies. You can change your browser settings so that cookies are not accepted. The settings will normally allow you to choose which websites you accept cookies from. This also applies to other service providers (third parties) that are linked to the website. In addition, you can ask to be notified each time a new cookie is stored on your device.

How to delete cookies in different browsers

The way you delete cookies will vary, depending on whether you are using a mobile phone, tablet or laptop.

What happens when you send us information via email?

When the police receive your message, we process your data. Then we delete your email.

Which services use politiet.no?

We use several tools from other service providers (third-party tools) to operate and offer services on politiet.no. Third-party cookies are processed in the same way as those generated by politiet.no.

  • We use Matomo to collect data and analyse how you use the website.
  • Episerver Find is our search engine.
  • We use Geocoder from OpenCage to find the address you are looking for. The service also shows which local authority area you are in, if you give permission to share your position.
  • We use the Norwegian Mapping Authority's map services "Search address lists" and quick search for place names to find the address you are looking for.
  • We have linked Norway Post's postcode list to the Geocoder service to find the closest place offering the service you are looking for. This could, for example, be the police station nearest to you.
