Ms. Benedicte Bjørnland was appointed National Police Commissioner of Norway on 20 December 2018 for a period of six years. She took over the position after the previous National Police Commissioner Mr. Odd Reidar Humlegård, who stepped down from the post in November 2018 at the end of his mandate. Ms. Bjørnland started in the position April 1 2019.
She is a graduate of law from the University of Oslo, and with American law from the University of North Dakota as specialized field. She started her career as legal adviser at the Norwegian Competition Authority in 1992. In 1993 she entered the post as police lawyer in Tønsberg Police District. She was subsequently deputy judge at Skien and Porsgrunn District Court, then head of prosecution and Assistant Chief of Police at Vestfold Police District. From 2005 till 2012, Ms. Bjørnland was Chief of Police of Vestfold Police District. She took office as Director General of the Norwegian Police Security Service in June 2012.
